Thank God for the BBC.

And just as importantly, the British taxpayer. :cheeky:

Between the BBC America TV channel, NPR broadcasts of BBC World Service programming, BBC shortwave broadcasts (yes, in this age of streaming I still use a short-wave radio) and their outstanding web presence the BBC is a surprisingly large part of my life.

Makes me want to hum a few bars of Rule Britannia!

The Stig is great! I also like the demolition scenes. There's a great episode of what they do to a pickup truck. What ever these guys try, the machine keeps running. They put it onto the beach, let the tide come in. The cord breaks and the truck is at natures mercy and...survives. In the following episode they put it on top of a flat and demolish the flat with explosives. The truck falls down during the explosion and...still runs :normal:

In another episode these guys shoot cars into a bulls eye deep down in a quarry onto a caravan! ha ha They hate caravans soo much lol There are other episodes they destroy caravans including dropping it from a crane!

last sunday, I think, there was a 'best of' of the show.. (yeah, the season on the Beeb has ended sadly) and there they showed some sort of contest between moderately famous brits (including Jezza (Jeremy) as one of the contestants) and one of the contests was Bowling with cars... that was really cool. With a sort of Car-canon, a car was blasted into a rack of other cars stacked like bowling pins.. :D

the stig, or new stig as he's called now, is the top gear test driver.
he thrashes the cars around a track trying to get the best time.

I agree with this 100%. I take advantage of any resource necessary to listen or watch the BBC. You certainly can't trust the USA's primary news sources.

Of course I WON'T add Rule Brittannia! ;)

He's 73. He added another room to his house to keep his Geographic collection. He has all of MAD AFAIK as well. Worst thing I could have done for him was buy his first VCR in the '80s. Sounds like quite a character...a very interesting man.

I can relate somewhat to the tapes with three movies...I myself have been downloading lots of classic film noir, silent films etc. etc. However, I must be somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50 or 60 and I am already beginning to question exactly why I am doing this and how much longer will I pursue it.

Anyway...I wish your Dad at least another 28 years of healthy living...then he will get his cake!;) :)

One thing I'd like to get is an USB Turntable or some other device to convert his old records. It would be more for my benefit actually since he has several records that are out of print and still sound fairly good. The one in particular is an 60s Christmas compilation from either Sears or JC Penney that has versions from artists I haven't been able to track down in any P2P sites.

And yeah, casually speaking the man has a sort of obsessive-compulsive thing with collecting. Coins, Avon bottles (worthless from what I've seen on Ebay), TV Guides, pine cones, and other things I'm too embarrassed to mention. :ermm:

http://www.ooma.com/

I have been using this for over 3 months and have had no problems. I now have 'no landline' or phone bill. Free long distance and local calling.

It's a VoIp service, similar to Vonage, except there are NO monthly fees. You pay for the device/box/hub and that's it. You need high speed internet.

The last time I looked it was $199.00 on amazon.

The last time I looked it was $199.00 on amazon.

www.ooma.com
Do you have the scout on any other phones?
I have 6 phones throughout the house (counting fax hook-up, etc.). I'd need 5 scouts, right?

I know people that only use cell phones now. They gave up land lines years ago. Do you have a cell too? Do you see yourself in a position to only use cell?

I use both. But I have a decent deal going on with the cable company. "VIP" Bundle its called. I get three things...HD cable channels/High speed internet (well, 5-8 MHz anyway)/Telephone service with all the bells that ooma has. But I do pay a little per month grant you. ooma is free after the initial cost.

If I could get out of the deal, and only for the price difference, I might do it. Problem is, they will raise the single price of the HD cable, and internet access fees if I only get two of the three. Thus, negating my savings.

BTW $99.00 USD total pkg.

Yes, I ported my old number. I was given a 'temporary' number from ooma, then I enabled call forwarding from AT&T.
My mother in law said it sounds better than the land line. Other people have said it sounds better. Occasionally there is some echo, but nothing to mention here. Oh, well you know what I mean.

Do you have the scout on any other phones?

Yes, I have the one scout that came with the ooma hub. I'm looking into getting a cordless DECT 6.0 with at least 2 satellite handsets. Then, there will be no need for any scouts. The main phone is hooked up to the ooma hub and all the satellites will ring. I have seen new scouts on ebay go for $15.00

I know people that only use cell phones now. They gave up land lines years ago. Do you have a cell too? Do you see yourself in a position to only use cell?

I have not had a cell phone for 4 years. Yeah, this may be risky, but with battery back up in case of an outage and E911, I feel comfortable. Plus, I know my neighbors!

Yeah, I had $30 $30 $30 deal from AT&T U-Verse *their new fiber service* I called and canceled the phone portion after my number ported. I can't personally address the fax issue, but I know people on ooma's forum have said it's possible.

It may be easier than you think to get out of triple and into a double. Just say "Economy is bad" and they will be willing to do something.

If you have more/any questions let me know. I'll try to help.
