Got windows? Thought so :D. This thread is dedicated to the art of customising your desktop. How does yours look like that fits your needs? Post a picture of it here and share your ideas about the ultimate desktop layout, colours, skins, settings, and more.

Here is my desktop :evolved: . Notice the style XP skin. It's called luminair, a hybrid between a linux theme and windows longhorn i believe. Furthermore, the start menu is on the left for better overview and quickstart is filled with all my favourite programmes. This way i avoid polluting the desktop with icons ;). Also notice the time and date in the lower left. The day and date only appears when you move the taskbar to the left. Very nice :D

Spread the Luminaire love people!

I made the little tweak of italicising my title text for the pure fact that it looks nicer in that font when ClearTyped.

The Wallpaper isn't the usual paper but it changes very often so I captured what was on there at this second in time (it's a subscribers only GU Comics wallpaper, which was release yesterday so it's still up...for now!)

Forget you and your style xp... its all about the 3d colour changer... plus you guys and your shiny curved surfaces... it saddens me... its all about flatness!

Of particular note on my desktop is the completely flat taskbar, the altered start button and menu, plus I threw in my command line window just to show off ;)

Hey, neat thread. Someone posted a Desktop thread on another Forum, so I actually took a picture of my Desktop about a week or so ago! The screen doesn't have any Windows open or anything, so it's just my Desktop. I'm using some Icons I found I believe on Deviant Art many many months ago. The theme I'm using is Metallic Shades (Compact Mode). My Wallpaper is from Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (on GameCube).

My friend got it a few weeks ago... and it's one of the most fun multiplayer games I've ever played. It's a really odd experience, but in a good way. It's sort of like playing a single player quest and bringing some friends along. I'm having a blast. So I found this Wallpaper online, and redid it adding new background, and changing the characters to match the ones we're playing as. My character is the guy with the bucket on his head.

http://home.insightbb.com/~ice643/Boards/Wallpaper_2003-03-21.jpg

I'm having a problem attatching this as a file so I'll just add it to my post. If anyone would rather the image not be posted in the post let me know and I'll take it down or replace it with a link to it.

Well, seeming i already went to the bother of posting my desktop into another thread, i might as well post it here too...

First off, for some reason i went icon crazy on my desktop, so i then decided to create some sort of order in the confusion... and hence came my idea of grouping similar apps together...

QCD skin = phaseless 1 (twilight mode.. soon to be changed... :()
Windows xp theme = 521 (compact mode)
wallpaper is from some anime... don't ask me where i found it, just one of those random events...
And good ol' rainlendar is sitting in the bottom right, reminding me of those things i always forget...

And another thing i found quite by accident, if you drag the my documents folder to a corner of your screen, you get a toolbar, which i find really usefull... and saves on the clicks....

(attachment removed to get back some attachment quota...)

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that more than half the desktops posted so far are using a theme or major elements that are associated with non-MS operating systems? Two of them are using a linux-hybrid theme, and matt's has the taskbar at the top and the apple icon, looking to me like an attempt to "Mac-ify" windows...

In any case, I'd just like to plug WinT's website (http://wint.virtualplastic.net)... its a great resource for anyone who really wants to get into the guts of windows and a few windows programs and alter things that you can't change any other way.

Sheepeh

Well personally I love the way Linux can be made to look like anything, but I always end up finding if I try such things on Windows I either don't know how to use it or it ends up trying to hardlink to programs that aren't there and looks really cheap.

I use WinXP because I need the compatability with hardware and games, and the ease of installing things. My Linux partitions are rarely used these days because even though I agree with the ideals of it it just doesn't run my games, and installing ATI's gfx drivers took me 3 days last time I tried (I'm a linux newb).

Making XP look a bit more like Linux gives it that nice bit of indiviuality while keeping the compatability I guess, if Linux managed *easy* insstallation and running of Windows stuff I'd be over to it in a shot, but that ain't happening any time soon.

Assmongrel
03-04-2004, 10:56 PM
Oh, I fully agree... linux would be great, if it were easier to set up, and was more compatible with the programs I use and games I play... of course, thats the old contradiction... finding the balance where things are easily changeable, but still stable, where you can change things if you want to, but you don't almost need a masters to set it up properly... the problem is, in order for it to get more user-friendly, you need more people using it, working with it on a daily basis, but before that can happen, it needs to be more user-friendly.

In any case, I wasn't saying that its bad to try to make windows look like something else, its just ironic. You use XP because of its stability, its ease of use, and its compatibility, but you would prefer to use linux, so you try to make windows look like linux.

Now if only QCD was available for linux.... :evolved:

Maybe Longhorn is really just going to be an overblown Linux distro with an MS front end? Kinda like Lindows, only with a Linux backend powering a Windows frontend.

Maybe that's why MS are suing Lindows for the name...Longhorn...Lindows...

It's definitely an attempt of mac-ification. I much prefer the taskbar at the top of my screen. I think when MS decided to copy and improve on mac's title bar they didn't place it on the top because they would have had to many people saying win95 was a rip (more then it already was). The 'start' button is a glorified apple menu, so I might as well pay homage by replacing the 'start' with an apple.

I don't think its ironic, so much as intelligent.... while mac's may be leaps and bounds ahead in industrial design, and possibly o/s design, the pc is far more flexible, and ultimately the superior machine.

Looks like i'm the only one placing the start menu on the left side of the screen :scared: I thought more people did this.

As for the linux based theme, i too have linux on my pc. However, I use linux just for 2 purposes; to mess around with and to do programming in fortran. The console (or command terminal) is really useful for the latter :cyclops:

It's indeed a pity QCD is not build to work with linux. Now i have to use Xmms and it looks so winamp :grimreape . I tried wine once and emulated QCD on linux, and everything worked except when i tried to play a song nothing happened :(

Wine is a windows emulator in linux. You can load just any windows programme under wine in linux, especially the simple ones like notepad and solitaire. So i decided to try out installing QCD in the wine environment. Installing went fine, except that the license agreement was blank :). Loading of QCD went fine, except for some minor glitches on the default skin. Opening a song or directory worked as well, but glitches became more evident. Then i tried playing a song, nothing happened. I went to preferences and thats where it became clear to me it will never work. The reason being is that all the text in the preferences is shown like this: ????????? :ponder: Obviously the output plugin isn't going to work when everything is shown in questionmarks and the whole player is basically a mess. :D

There are nearly 200 skins on the Skinbase website. My own favourite is Kneb, which as well as having a pleasing, functional design is also one of the few large skins for this program, which I happen to prefer to the usual tiny ones.

i really should organize some of this stuff off of my desktop. but it doesn't really matter since i always have several windows open covering most of it.

i had rainlendar on my desktop for the longest time but i never used it so i took it off.

i have a double-tall task bar at the bottom so that the quick launch toolbar is accessible without interfering with the active application buttons. another advantage of the taller area is having the day of week and date show up in the clock area and bleucanard's tray control plugin.

i don't remember where i got the visual style or the wallpaper

Adding to that, i think the size of the quicklaunch shortcuts also depends on the visual style... the minamalistic styles generally have smaller shortcuts and allow more to be fit into a smaller area.

Drewkeller, how did you manage to dock the QCD player in the start menu? That's what i've been after for so long. Similarly, I once discoved a utility that is basically an empty window which is always on top where you can drag programmes in. I never managed to find it anymore :(

i.e. i like certain programmes to be "always on top", but i dont like how other windows sit behind the "always on top" programmes.

Similarly, I once discoved a utility that is basically an empty window which is always on top where you can drag programmes in. Windows PowerPro makes a very nice quick launch bar although setting it up is not the easiest thing to do ... there are so many things you can do with PPro. Mine is a hidden bar at the top so you don't see it in the screenshot.

if you have XP, you can make a new toolbar and drag it so it's a floating palette and then set it to stay on top. maybe that is what you're looking for. it would be easy to use.

What i really mean is shown below. A window, or something like it, where applications can be placed. The window stays on top of other applications and other applications cannot be placed behind it. Of course i created the whole thing in paint shop pro, you can see in the taskbar. So i'm not fooling around ;)

I'll check out window powerpro nevertheless, it looks pretty cool and is freeware! :D I'll also check out the plugin.

I use style xp, too bad it is not freeware. There are ways around the problem though like installing a certain file that will make windows xp recognise other mmstyles theme files. I think someone mentioned it in the forum, you might wanna try a search.

It's a good thing we don't have any Mac users around here, or else all Hell would break loose... ;)
I wouldn't be so quick to call Windows or PCs superior, just because most people use PCs doesn't necessarily mean so (Macs are Mighty Pricey)...
They have their advantages and disadvantages. Even though I have a PC, I'd prefer a Mac and have vowed for my next computer to be a Mac Laptop...

Although I don't want to have this thread degenerate into a mac vs. pc argument, I have one last thing to say: Macs are more stable, and definitely have advantages in certain areas (such as media manipulation, ie: photoshop and film editing) I believe pcs are better because of their malleability... you aren't restricted to just using the supplied O/S, there isn't just one hardware vendor, and the architecture of apple software is so closed (at least in my admittedly limited experience) that power-users would find it restrictive. All that being said, if/when I buy a laptop, it will likely be either a Mac, or a windows box that can be upgraded. If theres anything left to be debated, we should start a new thread, rather than cluttering this one up further.

As far as software to customize the start menu/taskbar, I use TClock2 (http://home.inreach.com/2tone/tclock2/tclock2.htm (http://home.inreach.com/2tone/tclock2/tclock2.html)) to alter my clock (obviously), give it the "flat" look, and to alter my start button.... as far as altering the start menu itself, I used one of the tutorials on WinT's website (http://wint.virtualplastic.net as previously mentioned)

I want to something too. the fact that macs are more stable is because of the restrictions mentioned. It's not hard to get two things working together but to get everything work with each other, that's another thing. Balance was mentioned before, goes for this too.

There are more, I just can't remember them. Also, here (http://skins2.wincustomize.com/rsplitter/screenshots/desktop_1024_22.jpg) is my desk.

It was the basis for the QCD icon. I installed the app, its pretty neat. Drop the above image into the objectdock folder and then you can select it to appear with the QCD app. Much better looking vs the 48x48 icon. This is a PNG 256x256.

it's still got some things i'd like to see as far as features and performance, but mostly meets my needs.
replacing use of quicklaunch and eliminating annoying desktop clutter.

nothing annoys me more than a desktop with a bajillion icons

Cheap/quick/non-CPU intensive solution -> Put em all in the quick launch ;)

Press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard, then go to paint and paste the image. Or get a good paint programme like Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. They have a screengrabber build in.

i've only got one firewall (ZoneAlarm)
do your screenshot and then paste it as a new image etc... then resize it and save.
the max width of an image is 530,i think the height is a bit more negotiable but considering most people want to keep the same aspect ratio it's almost always less than whatever the max height is , help? :skull:

Rory, you'd have to create new shortcuts and plug in the text there. I've attached the pair I made. Maybe this'll help. (Note: These are untested.) You can place them on your desktop, if you like.

Rex_Mundi_Incarnit
06-01-2004, 07:37 PM
Uhm, sorry guys. Here is a step by step:

1) Right click on desktop
2) click 'create new shortcut'
3) for shortcut for restart computer, enter the following into the box:
'C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 01'
4) click OK to make the shortcut.
5) go to its properties to change the icon to whatever you like ;)

Do the same for the shutdown shortcut only paste this into the target box:
'C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 01'

Note that when you use these two command lines, windows must be on your c:\> drive else change the path accordingly.

ps. J44XM, that zip file contains the executable, everyone who has windows should already have it in their windows\system32 directory ;)

Good to see your enjoying it, it truly is unbelievable the depth of quests available. I've done mages, fighters, thieves and main quests, yet theres still so many... :puzzled: And make sure you get the expansion packs for it, tribunal and bloodmoon, both are good, maybe not as a good as the original game, but do add alot more quests and storyline.

While I like the idea of programs being only a click away (which is why I have been using Hiddenmenu for a few years...) the desktop space taken up by a setup like Rex is just too mush IMO. There is nothing wors than programming on a 1024x768 desktop or a desktop where the menu takes %30 of the space.

Hey, Rex.. Nope, it's actually W2Kpro. The startrek emblem is my configuration on the TClock app I have for my taskbar time & date. Spillman is our law enforcement program that keeps track of our officers & calls. QCD works perfectly on this and all earler systems I've used. Then made it my desktop, slightly hiding a lot of mine real icons confusing eveyone who tried to use my PC. I changed it after my instructor was trying to fix a bug on my PC, and he didn't think it was too funny when reboots didn't fix the appearent lockups!
Wild!

Thought I'd show mine off too. Keep in mind that this is on Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop running a Pentium II @ 300 mhz. How's that for being behind the times? :silly:

By the way, the bar on the right is Office '97.

Here be a screendump (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v405/RMI/screenshot_linux1.jpg) of my linux desktop. The fancy infomation you see about my computer are themes that work with a programme called Superkaramba. It is basically the same as Samurize for windows.

whoah man that looks REALLY cool
what's "nicotine" ?
so all that stuff stays on your desktop while you do other stuff ?
are they all 'standard icons' ? or are you armed to the teeth with icon libraries?

Rex_Mundi_Incarnit
11-20-2004, 09:18 PM
Nicotine is the equivalent of soulseek in windows, a p2p client ;)

All that stuff stays there, yes. It is all transparent and i can lock these items to the desktop. What you see is a mixture of 3 themes. They all have their own icons and stuff. The taskbar theme is different, thats just like style xp. The theme for that is called acqua-graphite.

I think its cool too. There are so many of these graphical niceties out there, personalising the linux desktop in different ways is endless.

In your profile, you want to put a setting that says everyone can see your pics in photobucket. (Account options -> Make public; yes)

When you upload a picture of size no more than 250KB to preserve the resolution, you can post it directly using [IMG] tags, you can link it or you can tag it (never tried this one before). You see the addresses you want below each uploaded picture.
