View Full Version : Messenger Plus and Spyware
Hey all,
I installed this application 'Messenger Plus' the other day and it came loaded with a nasty spyware program called 'LOP'. I have had a hell of a time trying to remove this spyware from my machine, but it refuses to go. I have downloaded all the adware removal apps i could trust and they dont touch it.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

If it is from a website, you can go to that website and it'll have a removal tool there.

download adaware here (http://www.lavasoft.nu/)
adaware doesn't detect it.
I got it from installing Messenger Plus. It added a toolbar to IE. The uninstall tool from the lop.com website had a trojan in it (says my antivirus program) so i didn't touch it.
I also do not know how to uninstall Messenger Plus. No uninstall information in the control panel and no uninst file in the directory.

ya you don't want a trojan on top of that lop crap, you may have to reinstall messenger plus version 2,and that might put the uninstall back in the add remove list.Pm me i used a ad removal tool that did find it and removed it.good thing you brought this up or i would have never known.

Try SpyBot Search and Destroy with the latest datafiles. While checking my system (always clean, of course ;) ), I've seen LOP appear in the progress window, so I know it's checking for it.

DAMM messenger plus installing that lop shit...
i had this same problem, i spent about 4 hrs getting the crap off...
My adaware and spybot each found bits of it... but i think it puts an .exe in a windows folder somewhere, and each time its run i think it replicates itself...
this thing is worse than a lot of viruses, ya might wanna check out the forums on the msn plus site, thats were i found most of the info to remove it...
and spybot s&d has a section in the program devoted to disabling internet explorer dlls, so you should be able to disable the bar through that...
maybe doind some google searches may help too, theres plenty of people out there with this problem, because msn plus used to have the option for installing lop checked as default, so most people just clicked next and ended up getting this shit...

I dunno but I have Messenger Plus and never got an extra toolbar or anything. I use Spybot to hunt down any spyware and my trusty Google toolbar to protect me from pop-up windows.
I guess you only need to pay attention when installing it, because if my mind doesn't fails, it has an option in the setup to not install the crappy stuff. I might be wrong of course...
I had that LOP crap on my workstation once and it's a pain in the ass... so I understand how Matt feels (or felt).

Yep, that's the most extensive analysis I read about LOP at that time when I had it on my machine. Very useful website.

its true that there is an option in the installer to install plus without lop, but only recently has the creator decided to have that option unchecked as default...
I got caught out just clicking next as i normally do...
And he also tries to make out that this lop shit is harmless, just something that gives him a little bit of an income on the side...WHAT A BLOODY JOKE!!!

This is what I do daily, or after an extended session.
1.Empty Temp Internet Folders
2.Run updated Spybot
3.Run updated Adaware
4.Run Regcleaner (full scan)
5.Reboot
6.Run HijackThis!
7. AVG twice a week
You'd be amazed what gets caught. Funny thing is, I've been using Firebird/fox for about three weeks now and most of this has become redundant. Before Firebird I'd only ever used Internet Explorer.
I still check all the time. Can't be too careful.
See yous'

It's amazing how much more crap get's by when you use IE,what i like about spybot is the immunize ,that keeps most of the crap from coming back. And i run jv16 powertools to keep my registry clean and healthy.

Spybot isn't being supported very well at the moment (like the last 2 weeks).
Running Adaware after Spybot seems to find more stuff at the moment.
Oh and don't run Adaware first because it,s been known to "find" Spybot from time to time, harmless but annoying.

vote vote vote ? (http://beta.quinnware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1069)
I think i finally removed it all from my machine. It's a shame when developers decided to couple their hard work with malicious software just to make money. I would sooner pay then have this nasty software installed. Kazaa suffers from the same fault.
I guess it's my own fault for installing it. Live and learn.
